EMPLOYMENT Civilian employment grew at an annual rate of 2.6 percent during the fifth plan. The number of civilian employees increased by 818,300 (from 6,049,400 in 1990 to 6,867,700 in 1994). The total number of Saudis employed increased at an average annual rate of 3.8 percent from 1,981,500 in 1990 to 2,384,200 in 1994. Thus, the Saudi share of total employment increased from 32.8 percent to 34.7 percent during the fifth development plan period 1990-1994. INFLATION Due to the second Gulf war in 1990, prices rose sharply in the early years of the fifth development plan then subsided in the later years. The overall annual rate of inflation, as measured by the non-oil deflator, was 3.2 percent for the 1990-1994 period. |
