The value of the Kingdom's imports from the rest of the world in 1990 was SR90,139.5 million (U.S.$24,037.2 million). The ranking of the top five exporting countries to Saudi Arabia during 1990 placed the U.S. at first place with an importation value of SR15,062 million (U.S. $4,016.5 million) representing about 17 percent of the Kingdom's total imports (see table 16). Japan was in the second place (SR13,815 million, or U.S.$3,684 million), followed by England (SR10,182 million, or U.S.$2,715.2 million), Germany (SR6,645 million, or U.S.$1,772 million), and Switzerland (SR5,929 million, or U.S.$1,581.07 million). The Kingdom's imports in 1991 totaled SR108,881.3 million (U.S. $29,035 million). The top five exporting countries to the kingdom in 1991 were the U.S., in first place, with an importation value of SR22,003 million (U.S. $5,867.5 million), representing more than 20 percent of the Kingdom's total imports, followed by Japan SR14,915 million (U.S $3,977.3 million), England SR12,267 million (U.S. $3,271.2 million), Germany SR8,520 million (U.S. $2,272 million), and Switzerland SR5,282 million (U.S. $1,408.5 million).The Kingdoms imports from the rest of the world during the period from 1992 to 1994 were SR124,606 million (U.S. $33,228.3 million), SR105,616 million (U.S. $28,164.3 million), and SR87,422 million (U.S. $23.312 million) respectively. During this period, the same exporting countries ranking is maintained, as in the previous two years, except that Italy replaced Switzerland as the fifth exporting country to the Kingdom. The U.S.A, however, held its leading position with an annual average exceeding 21 percent of the total Saudi imports.

Table (17) shows the Kingdoms top five export markets for Saudi products during the years 1992-1994. The United States topped the list of importing countries with Saudi exports valued at U.S. $10,711.5 million, U.S. $7390.7 million, and U.S. $7390.7 million respectively. While Japan and South Korea maintained the second and the third positions in the list of the top five importing countries from Saudi Arabia, Holland, Singapore, Italy and France occupied the fourth or the fifth place in the list.

The overall direction of the Kingdom's exports indicates that three major regions maintained their top rankings during 1992 and 1994 (see table 18). Asian, not Islamic or Arabic, countries occupied first place with an average of about 37.16 percent of total Saudi exports during this period. Western European took second place with an average of 22.62 percent, followed by North America with an average of 19.93 percent. Western Europe has a visible lead as a source of the Kingdoms imports with an average of 39.75 percent over the period 1992-1994. While Asian, not Islamic or Arabic, countries captured the second place with an average of 23.41 percent, North America came in third place with an average of 22.7 percent of the Kingdoms total imports during the 1992-1994 period.
